He might not be a boldfaced name in local gossip columns each
week, and he might not strut around like a peacock at awards
shows, crowing about this or that major label that's been sniffing
around his studio. But Greg Laswell may just be one of the
greatest talents at work in San Diego.
Last year, one-time Shillglen frontman Laswell quietly released
"Good Movie," an impeccably-produced, atmospheric collection
of 13 hooky tracks of indie-rock bliss in the vein of Radiohead
and Beck. The music community took note, awarding Laswell the
2004 San Diego Music Award for Best Local Recording. Laswell
edged out such S.D. stalwarts as Gregory Page and Dave
Humphries for the honor.
In addition to songwriting and performing, Laswell's also one of
the local music circle's most sought-after producers, recently
twisting the knobs for singer/songwriters like Molly Jenson and
Dustin Shey via his production studio, 20 Inch Records. Laswell
also founded All the Rest Records, a combination record label/
independent music kiosk that operated in Fashion Valley mall
until earlier this year, when Laswell & Co. shuttered the operation
until they can find it a more suitable home. |
